In 2002, Irish President Mary McAleese has heralded the community spirit within Down District during a whistle stop tour of the area.
Hundreds of well wishers, along with community representatives and local dignitaries, came out to welcome President McAleese as she visited Ballymote Centre in Downpatrick, the Great Hall at Downe hospital, Downshire hospital and the newly refurbished Market House in Ballynahinch.
First port of call was the Ballymote Centre, where the Irish President stepped out to a rapturous reception from local people and treated to a rousing performance from the multi-awarding winning St. Miguel’s Band.
President McAleese, accompanied by husband Dr. Martin McAleese, took a walk-about tour of the building, where she chatted easily with local community group and council representatives, led by Chairman of Down District Council, Harvey Bicker.
Mrs. McAleese spoke with representatives from several of the groups, including Downpatrick Credit Union Ltd, Down Community Arts, Habitat for Humanity, Flying Horse Community Forum, Russell Gaelic Union and the Citizens Advice Bureau.
The Irish President said she was overwhelmed by the achievements of the groups.
“It is wonderful to see that the power of the community is thriving here in Downpatrick.
“The town is fortunate to have the leadership that it has, leadership that will ensure a better future for the children of the area.
“The Ballymote Centre is a springboard for much of the unique spirit in the town and I really feel, given the sense of energy, effort and determination of the people here, Downpatrick will enjoy a fantastic future,” she said.
The President’s visit was a huge hit among community representatives, who unanimously praised Mrs. McAleese for her interest in their work.
Local Project Chairperson of Habitat for Humanity, Greer Lowe, said it had been a great day for Downpatrick.
“The President was completely up to date on the progress of our project, and said that Habitat for Humanity was one of her favourite organisations.
“We hope to be dealing with her on a more regular basis, as the organisation is about to launch a project down in Dublin,” he said.
Chairman of the Russell Gaelic Union (RGU), Pat Branniff, said it had been a delight to welcome the Irish President into Downpatrick.
“A visit like this is great for the area, and helps to raise the profile and highlight the great work of the Ballymote Centre. |
